Karen Jones

Karen Ann Jones is a figurative oil painter whose work explores what happens when people become more fully themselves. Her paintings are about authenticity, courage, connection, reinvention, and the parts of ourselves we stop hiding when we finally decide to live more honestly. That same idea is at the heart of her book, Paint Your Future – A Visual Guide to Becoming Who You’re Meant to Be, and has been a thread running through her creative work for years.
Visually, Jones creates bold, cinematic scenes with a distinctly mid-century sensibility. Her paintings often carry the elegance, graphic shapes, fashion, and attitude of the 1960s and ’70s without being nostalgic or attempting to recreate those decades. After moving to the Palm Springs area, the desert began influencing her palette as well the saturated color, intense light, unexpected combinations, and unapologetic visual confidence of the region found their way into the work. Jones has spent years developing ways to achieve unusually vibrant, saturated color in oil paint, a medium more often associated with muted or traditional palettes. The result is work that can have the immediacy and color intensity people sometimes mistake for acrylic or watercolor, while retaining the depth, richness, and luminosity of oil.
Jones arrived in the desert after a long period of reinvention of her own. In St. Louis, she created businesses that regularly brought art into everyday life, including a yoga studio and gallery, a coffee shop and gallery, and six Airbnb lofts in downtown St. Louis. After leaving Missouri, she spent five years traveling in an Airstream and later spent two years searching for the place she wanted to call home. A strong creative community mattered enormously in that decision, and she found it here. Today, her paintings invite viewers into scenes that feel familiar but slightly mysterious moments in which someone seems to be choosing, changing, connecting, or simply refusing to disappear into the background.
